Lime Mortar Repointing Southend-on-Sea
A large majority old brick homes and walls in Southend-on-Sea were originally built with lime mortar and the need to continue this trend is crucial to the health of a old property or construction. A large number of Victorian properties will probably have been built with lime mortar, and not cement. It is essential that cement is not used in repairs. If cement is used, the movement common in old Victorian buildings can cause damage to the brickwork (this is also an integral part of church and cathedral restoration)
How much does repointing cost?
Based on the current condition and size of the pointing, repointing usually cost between £20-£40 per metre-squared in Southend-on-Sea. You could need scaffolding and other access, this may increase the overall cost. However, it’s worth it. New pointing should last over 50 years, so you won’t need to repoint again
With repointing you will likely evert expensive repair works that may be needed if moisture penetrates through damages in the properties pointing work and add real value to your home or commercial property.
What Is Repointing?
The word “Pointing” describes the visible outside face of mortar joints, they show on the outside surface of the external wall. “Re-pointing” (also called Pointing Up) is the restoration of pointing. This will be required after the mortar has been damaged because of age and weathering. After time, weather damage and decay can cause voids in the mortar joints between brickwork and stone. This will let water to come in, potentially causing serious property damage.
When will a home or property require Repointing?
It is important that you have the knowledge to pinpoint when you need to repoint. The identifying process is extremely easy. When reviewing your brick, a good guide to go by is to measure the depth of the mortar against the height of the mortar. As soon as the depth matches the height of the mortar gap, it’s time to get repointing. You can also simply use your finger to test the pointing, try digging your finger into a joint in the brickwork and seeing if the mortar breaks away. Try this in different areas around the front and back of the house.
Southend-on-Sea (/ˈsaʊθɛnd ən ˈsiː/ ( listen)), commonly referred to as simply Southend, is a town and wider unitary authority area with borough status in southeastern Essex, England. It lies on the north side of the Thames Estuary, 40 miles (64 km) east of central London. It is bordered to the north by Rochford and to the west by Castle Point. It is home to the longest leisure pier in the world, Southend Pier.London Southend Airport is located 1.5 NM (2.8 km; 1.7 mi) north of the town centre.
Southend-on-Sea originally consisted of a few poor fishermen’s huts and farms at the southern end of the village of Prittlewell. In the 1790s the first buildings around what was to become the High Street of Southend were completed. In the 19th century Southend’s status of a seaside resort grew after a visit from Princess Caroline of Brunswick, and Southend Pier was constructed. From the 1960s onwards the town declined as a holiday destination, Southend redeveloped itself as the home of the Access credit card, due to it having one of the UK’s first electronic telephone exchanges. After the 1960s much of the town centre was developed for commerce and retail, and many original structures were lost to redevelopment. An annual seafront airshow, started in 1986 when it featured a flypast by Concorde on a passenger charter flight, used to take place each May and became one of Europe’s largest free airshows. The show has not been held since 2012 due to a lack of sponsorship and funding cuts.
