Common Church and Cathedral Stonework Issues

If you are a church/cathedral property managers or owner, you should look out for the following:

  • Check the joints between you properties stonework. Make sure that stone pieces (such as skew coping stones, window cills, wall copes etc.) have are pointed with strong lime mortar. If the lime mortar is compremised, water will get into the building or structure and can cause a large amount of damage.
  • Regularly check the tracery window details found within arches. They often hold priceless stained glass windows, so it’s important that these are maintained and kept strong so that the glass is kept stable. Strong winds can cause a rocking motion on the glass that also effects the details, often crushing the lime mortar in the stone joints, compounding the masonry stability problem. Make sure you look out for snapped transoms (the horizontal stone pieces) and damaged mortar in the joints.
  • Look out for holes! Make sure all holes in the masonry are filled as quickly as possible. Typically, churches and Cathedrals are well over a hundred years old. Most of the original lime mortar will have perished and this can cause holes to appear. If left, these holes can progress into much bigger issues.
