What Is Repointing?

The word “Pointing” is the visible outer face of mortar joints, they show on the surface of the wall. “Re-pointing” (a.k.a Pointing Up) describes the replacement of the outer face of mortar. When does a house or property need Repointing?

It is important that you know how to identify when it is time to repoint. The process is extremely simple. When examining your wall, a good guide to check is to measure the depth of the mortar against the height of the mortar. When the depth is bigger than the height of the mortar gap, it’s time to get repointing. You should also try using your finger to test the pointing, simply dig your finger into a joint between bricks and see if any mortar comes away. You should try this test in multiple areas of both the back and front of the house.
