What Is Repointing?

“Pointing” describes the visible external area of mortar joints, these joints appear between brickwork on the surface of the external wall. “Re-pointing” (also called Pointing Up) is the replacement of pointing. Repointing might be required after the mortar has been damaged because of age. After time, weathering and decay can cause damages in the joints between the masonry. These voids will allow water to enter, potentially causing significant damage.

“Pointing … is crucial to the appearance, stability and durability of Britain’s old buildings. The attractive appearance of this country’s historic walls owes as much to the character of the jointing as to the bricks or stones themselves.”
Making the Point, English Heritage, 1994.

When will a home or property need Repointing?

It’s important that you can pinpoint when it is time to repoint. The identifying process is extremely easy. When checking the brickwork, a good way to go by is to measure the depth of the mortar against the height of the mortar. As soon as the depth is bigger than the height of the mortar filling, you’ll probably require repointing. You can also simply use your finger to test the pointing, try digging a finger into a joint in the brickwork and see if any mortar breaks away. Try this in multiple areas around the front and back of the home.

About Tyne and Wear

Tyne and Wear ( /ˌtaɪn ən ˈwɪər/) is a metropolitan county in the North East region of England around the mouths of the rivers Tyne and Wear. It came into existence in 1974 after the passage of the Local Government Act 1972. It consists of the five metropolitan boroughs of South Tyneside, North Tyneside, City of Newcastle upon Tyne, Gateshead and City of Sunderland. It is bounded on the east by the North Sea, and has borders with Northumberland to the north and County Durham to the south.

Prior to the 1974 reforms, the territory now covered by the county of Tyne and Wear straddled the border between the counties of Northumberland and Durham, the border being marked by the river Tyne; that territory also included five county boroughs.
