What Is Repointing?

The word “Pointing” describes the visible outer face of mortar joints, the mortar will show on the outside surface of the external wall. “Re-pointing” (also known as Pointing Up) refers to the restoration of the outer face of mortar. This is usually required after the mortar has been lost due to age. After time, weather damage and decay can cause damages in the mortar joints between the masonry. This will allow water to penetrate, potentially causing significant damage and dangerous damp.

It is essential that you have the knowledge to determine when it is time to repoint your property. Checking you mortar is extremely easy. When reviewing your brick, a good guide to check is to measure the depth of the mortar against the height of the mortar gap. When the depth is bigger than the height of the mortar gap, you’ll probably require repointing. You can also simply use your finger to test the mortar, simply dig a finger into the joints in the bricks and seeing if the mortar breaks away. Try this test in different areas around the back and front of the home.
